Recycling Solutions

We guarantee that all post consumer carton material that is collected, will be recycled as long as it meets our mill specifications.

Paper mills, which perform the actual recycling of cartons are integral to the process. We are conducting trials with UK mills and are also feeding material in to two European mills to recycle cartons. One is even in Tetra Pak’s homeland, Sweden!

Until we are able to secure dedicated UK carton reprocessing facilities, we will continue to feed material in to Europe. In doing this, we:

  1. Are able to ensure that the cartons are recycled
  2. Minimise the distance that the material travels. Exporting material for recycling is not uncommon within the paper industry, particularly as waste and recycling is a global market. Many materials collected in the UK market are in fact sent overseas to places like India and China as they offer highly competitive prices for the materials.
  3. Expand carton collection across the UK, thus making UK reprocessing capacity more viable.

Cartons have one of the lowest carbon footprints of all rigid, one way packaging systems for liquid food or drink.

A whole range of products can be made from recycled cartons, including egg boxes, plaster board liner, paper bags, envelopes, reel cores and even writing paper! In fact, UK publications are printed on paper made with recycled beverage cartons.

You may be aware that we did have a dedicated UK reprocessing facility between 2004 and 2005. What happened to it?

The Smith Anderson mill in Fife used to be able to recycle all cartons collected in the UK, but it had to close in 2006 when energy prices made its main paper recycling business uneconomic. This is not uncommon within the paper industry, particularly as waste is a global market. Many materials collected in the UK market are in fact sent overseas to places like India and China as they offer highly competitive prices for the materials.
